Last year we threw some leftover Christmas decor in the kids’ bedrooms and they LOVED it! So since we put up our Christmas Tree & Lighted Garland on our Archways, they’ve been asking when they get the colored lights in their rooms…. Today was the day to surprise them with their Kid’s Room Christmas Decor.
Surprising the kiddos with any kind of reveal in their bedrooms is one of my favorite things! Their excitement for any change in their little space is always so fulfilling.
Kid’s Room Christmas Decor Step #1: Clean
First thing I had some speed cleaning to do. We have been busy having their Granny here for Thanksgiving and then getting back into the swing of school. Their rooms haven’t had much attention for a couple weeks. It is so rewarding to start with complete chaos and then end with a clean, organized space.
I knew they would be just as appreciative of the clean as the decorating. My middle child says, Mom, you are just so good at cleaning.” Haha, she knows how to make a momma want to help her out.
Watching a space go from disaster to clean is so motivating! If you need a little cleaning motivation check out my son’s room clean & decorate in under 2 minutes:
Kids Room Christmas Decor Theme- Kid Style
Last year we got some new Christmas decor for our house so we had a bunch of leftover old lights that I strung on the girls’ bunk bed and the giddiness they got from that…. palpable! The best thing about decorating the kids’ rooms is there is no such thing as tacky. The more color, mismatch, over the top, the more they like it.
I put colored icicle lights up in Bryson’s room. Next year I might go all the way around the top of his walls. It is really pretty bright. He sleeps in the dark, so we had to turn them off at bedtime because they lit up the whole room!
The girls’ room now glows with Christmas time magic too. They’ve got colored lights on each of their bunks, and an extra strand draped over their bookshelf. I also added a strand of fairy lights draped over their mirror (those might stay after Christmas). Fairy lights are so cute & dainty.
Next year I’m thinking of adding colored curtain lights either on the inside of their doorway or around their bunk bed… and just completely Clark Griswald their little space up!
Extra Treats
What adds to kids excitement more than…. sugar?! On that note, I got them little pails & some of their favorite candies all in Christmas wrappers of course. My little guy’s eyes were opened so wide with awe as he said, “Mom, are you sure you want me to have candy in my room?!” He couldn’t believe the privilege he was getting, haha.
Kids make every day of December so magical! I love doing this little thing to make their space feel like the special Holiday season all December long. My hubby added something so cute to their bedtime routine too. At night we now read (in our best singing voices) the 12 days of Christmas song/book and each person picks a day and then we sing our part in order. We do this little tradition in their room, under the magical sparkling light of all their colored Christmas lights!
What a cute little tradition, right? They get such a kick out of. Last night my lil 6 year old, Bryson was being such a ham and singing his part, “Partridge in a Pear Tree” in the highest notes we’ve ever heard. He cracks us (& his own self) up. And last night singing together in the girl’s clean room with the Kids Room Christmas Decor all around us- it felt just that much more special.
