7 Brilliant & Budget-Friendly DIY Closet Organizer Ideas
These 7 brilliant closet organizer ideas will make your closet the smartest used space in your home. All 7 are budget-friendly closet ideas!
Cami Organizer:
I have a whole drawers worth of cami’s. Whenever I need a cami to wear under something- I need to quickly sift through them all. Therefore, cami’s folded or stuffed into a drawer isn’t the best way to be able to see them all. The arms on this towel rack can easily rotate around so I can hang camis on one and dresses on another, etc.
This Swivel 4 Arm Towel Bar, holds SO many camis and dresses and takes up so little space. Best of all- it is easy and quick to slide them all off & slide them all back on in one fell swoop!
Jean Shorts on Hooks
To be able to quickly grab and hang up jean shorts, I opted for S hooks. They fit snuggly on the wooden closet rod and display my whole jean short collection in a small space.
Hanging Dress Pants
I mounted these IKEA valet hangers in the back corner of the closet to hang my dress pants. I bought these small clamp hangers to hang them from the valet hooks without taking up a lot of space.
Using the valet hooks, rather than hanging these from the closet rod, uses so much less space and utilizes that small corner in the back of the closet perfectly.
IKEA Dress Pants Storage
For the hubby’s dress pants, 2 IKEA Komplement pants hangers stacked over one another hold them all perfectly.
Ties & Belts
The hubs has about a million and a half ties… I hung another IKEA valet hanger on his side to hang his 2 tie hangers from.
By hanging the tie hangers from the valet hook rather than the closet rod creates a lot more open space. Because, if they are hung from the closet rod there is a bunch of open/unused space behind them.
Hangers
We can’t build more space in the closet, so I replaced all our plastic hangers with these thin black velvet Space Saving Hangers. They really do allow you to hang more items in the same amount of space.
For the hub’s suit coats I got these black Extra Wide Shoulder Wood Coat Hangers. I figured he spends some good money on his suit coats, might as well have some good quality hangers that store them the way they should be stored. (At least thats how I justified the cost of the hangers to myself;)
Aestetics
I painted the walls White so that its lighter and brighter. It actually feels bigger too. Color coding everything automatically makes it look more uniform to the eye as well. I sing Mickey Mouse’s “Red, orange, yellow, green, blue. Don’t forget there’s purple too… Rainbow colors for me and you!” song every time for reference, ha!

How to Create DIY Closet Organizer Plans
First, you’ll want to take inventory of how much hanging space, drawer space, and shelf space you’ll need.
Then, grab a pencil and paper to draw out your closet floorplan. Think of different ways you could configure your space that would give you the right amount of each: hanging space, drawer space, and shelf space.
- DIY Closet Shelves and Rods
You’ve drawn out the plan, so now you can figure out where to add/remove rods and shelves. I made shelves 3 different ways.. All of the details for the DIY Closet Shelves “How-To’s” can be found here!
- DIY Closet Organizer with Drawers
Every dreamy closet has some type of drawer storage somewhere inside. After a ton of research on all the different options I decided on hacking the IKEA pax system to add most of my drawers.
The “how-to” for the IKEA Pax Hack and the 2 other brilliant ways to add drawers for closet storage is here. Be sure to check that out to maximize your closet space with these 3 ways to add drawers to your closet!
